Insurance follows the car.  You, as a driver, do not have auto insurance, an automobile is insured.  If your parent’s automobile is insured, and you are driving it with their permission, the insurance covering the car is in force.  If you live apart from your parents and don’t have a car or insurance on a car, and you are a licensed driver, you can, with their permission drive their insured car and the car will remain covered.
