In Montana and in many state the answer is no because you have no insurable interest. But you can get what is called a non-owned policy that covers you driving any car for liability only so long as you do not have a car titled in your name. The policy is very reasonable as far as rates go and protect you if you hurt someone in and accident and also protects you if you are hurt in an accident and have un insured motorist and under insured motorist.

The reason you can not insure someone else's auto is the insurance company in the event of a claim would have to issue the payment for the car that you were driving was damaged the check would have to go to the owner of the car.
