   Car insurance can start immediately.  When you sign up for auto insurance, either directly through the insurance company (typically done online) or through an agent, you have the option of setting the effective date of the policy.  
   
   For example, if you are purchasing a new car you can sign up for insurance at the auto dealer online and print out proof of insurance immediately.
   
   Even if you purchase new auto insurance through an agent he/she can draft a proof of auto insurance on an ACORD form for you in the office.
