In Illinois, your owned vehicle insurance policy generally extends coverage to the temporary use of a rental car, rented in the 50 states and Canada. The same coverage applies. That means that if you do NOT have physical damage coverages on your own policy, i.e. collision and comprehensive, you won't have them for the rental vehicle either. You would then need to purchase the physical damage waiver from the rental agency.
All of this discussion refers to the rental of a private passenger vehicle. If you're moving and rent a truck for your belongings, your personal auto insurance will probably not cover it.
