A lapse in auto insurance means you went without auto insurance for a certain period of time. In many states this is a factor for rating purposes. The lapse is viewed as a time your driving record could not be verified which could potentially cause you to have higher rates. Never let your auto insurance lapse if possible  There are exceptions such as military service that are taken into consideration.
