Auto insurance can provide you protection from physical damage and liability losses depending on the amounts and types of coverage that you choose. The basics for auto insurance coverage options are bodily injury ( this is normally injuries that another person sustains when you are involved in an accident and deemed responsible), property damage ( damage done to property from an auto accident that you are deemed responsible for), medical payments ( amount available for your medical treatment when involved in an accident), uninsured motorist ( coverage that provides for damages when you are involved in an accident with an uninsured motorist), under-insured motorist ( this coverage comes into play if you are involved in an accident and the responsible party for the accident does not have enough coverage to provide for all of the damages caused by the accident), other than collision "comprehensive" ( this is physical damage coverage for your vehicle typically less a deductible), and collision ( this is a physical damage coverage for your vehicle typically less a deductible).

There are 4 major potential losses that your auto policy protects  you from:  Bodily Injury, Property damage, Personal Injury, and physical damage to your vehicle.  Let's take a quick look at these.  Be advised that I'm speaking specifically for the state of Michigan.  Your state may be slightly different.

Bodily Injury - In Michigan if you injure someone in an auto crash, you can be sued for:
         Wrongful Death
         Disfigurement
         Loss of Bodily Function
         Loss of Wages

These lawsuits are big dollars.  Be sure you're carrying high enough limits to protect your assets

Property Damage - If you cause damage to property with your car, you can be sued to repair or replace that property

Personal Injury - This is an injury to the driver and any passengers in the car.  In Michigan, there is unlimited lifetime coverage for this.  Check in your state for it's specific limit.

Physical Damage to your auto - This is the coverage that will fix your car for a covered accident.

One last item I'll cover is Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist coverage.  This is a coverage you carry that will pay you if you are injured in a car accident and the at fault driver either has no insurance or not enough to pay what you've won in court.

I didn't touch on things like towing or rental reimbursement as I didn't really think that was what you were asking, but those coverages are also available as well as some other small, specialized coverages.  the auto insurance policy is a complicated animal and you need an agent you can trust to be sure you build the right coverage in a way that you can afford it.
