Why should car insurance be mandatory?  The only actual mandatory part of auto insurance is the parts that cover other drivers or passengers who are injured by your driving.  Any personal or additional coverage on your auto is because you want it or your lender requires it.

States that require proof of auto insurance in order to register and operate vehicles on public access roads and highways mandate only that liability, uninsured/under insured motorist and in some cases, primary medical payments coverage be in force.   States also set a minimum amount of these coverage.  A lender or leasing company will require further that physical damage Comprehensive and Collision coverage be included in order to protect their interest in the car.  The choice of deductible is yours usually up to a $500 maximum.  Anything over and above these two elements is strictly up to you.
