    According to Wikipedia and other articles, Critical Illness Insurance was developed by Dr. Marius Barnard in 1983 in South Africa. Dr. Barnard named the policy "Dread Disease Insurance". As a cardiac surgeon (he served on the team of the first heart transplant, headed by his brother, Dr. Christian Barnard), he saw how critical illnesses impacted the lives of those who suffered from them, and developed a policy to offset that hardship.
