Whether private disability insurance can be garnished depends on the state in which you live. However, if you put your disability insurance payments in a bank account with other funds, the bank account can be garnished. So it is a good idea to keep those funds separate. Also, if you owe child support or back payments on a bill, even disability insurance payments can usually be garnished.
