    If the mental illness is a pre-existing condition, a new Disability Insurance policy might not cover it. If you got the Disability Insurance before being diagnosed with the mental illness, check your policy's wording to see if it covers disability due to mental illness. If a group policy, most limit Disability benefits for mental illness to a duration of two years.
