State disability insurance is a government mandated program that many people mistakenly believe they have, but don't. Only five states require private workers to participate in a short term disability program: California, Hawaii, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island. Social Security Disability Insurance is managed at the state level, but is a federally funded program. Temporary disabilities are not covered.
