There are only a couple of companies that sell short term disability insurance to an individual person. One is Mutual of Omaha and the other is Assurity Life, of which I am aware. Most short term disability insurance is provided to the employee through a group policy offered by her employer. It might be paid for by the employer, the employee, or both.

The best policy is one that covers normal childbirth. These policies are very difficult to find. Most insurers choose not to sell these policies directly to individuals. There are a number of carriers that sell them to individuals at the work site.

Your employer would have to agree to offer all employees an opportunity to purchase coverage, and make payments through payroll deduction. Since this may be your only option, the best policy is the one offered by your employer.
