    HIPAA covers a lot of ground including PHI (protected health information) and numerous regulations governing those who have access to PHI and how that information may be transmitted.

    The best known provision in HIPAA is the COBRA law that allows employees (and their dependents) to continue their employer group benefits after they have terminated employment.

    Individuals with severe pre-existing conditions should consider exercising their COBRA option to avoid being uninsured. Other individuals and family members should explore individual major medical options.
