Point Of Service plans (POS plans) are sort of a blend of HMO and PPO plans. Like an HMO, your plan may require you assign a primary care doctor and have them make referrals if you want/need to see a specialist. The PPO similarity comes from the fact that you may receive care from non-network providers but with greater out-of-pocket costs. You may also be responsible for co-payments, coinsurance and an annual deductible.

POS plans are useful for those who are willing to coordinate their care through their primary care doctor and the doctor is in-network.
