Most Home Insurance policies cover theft of personal property up to the limits set in the policy terms, regardless of location.  However, there are also certain restrictions and exclusions for this.  The limits and coverage will vary depending on what State you live in, so you'll need to check your policy documents to be sure.
For example, in California, most policies are written so off-premises theft coverage is limited to a certain percentage of the total for Personal Property coverage, usually 10%.  However, if the theft occurred during a move from one residence to another, and happened within 30 days from the time the move started, then this restriction is waived.
There are usually also specific limits for various types of property, such as jewelry, fine art, firearms and etc.  These limits will typically state limits such as $1000 per item / $5000 per loss or something similar.  There will also be a list of items not covered unless a specific rider is attached.  And there are also typically instructions on what happens if the property is eventually recovered.
