Depends on several factors including the State involved, the relative underwriting policies of the various carriers and the breed of dog. Since there are more than 4.5 million dog bites each year in the U.S. with more than 50% of them occurring on the dog owners' premises, it is easy to see why this can be a huge issue with regard to dog ownership and homeowner insurance coverage. The liability coverage supplied in homeowners and renters policies is at risk depending on these factors.

In most States, it depends on the breed of dog. Be upfront with a prospective or existing insurance carrier. Some carriers will increase your rates if you are an existing customer and others may refuse you as a customer. Others may be precluded from doing so, based on State regulations.

Your agent can help you with this process and should be able to tell you the position of each carrier with regard to your specific breed of dog.

Usually ownership of a pet does not affect the premium for a homeowner’s policy. Ownership of a dangerous dog or breed of dog is likely to stop a company from issuing any coverage at any price. Many companies have added an amendment to the policy that severely restricts coverage in the event of an incident involving a dog of certain breeds or a dog with a history of aggressive behavior.

Not necessarily, however, depending upon the insurance company and they way they have their underwriting standards filed in your state, having a particular breed of dog may make it difficult for you to buy the coverage. In addition to particular breeds, if you have had losses in the past relating to dog bites, those past losses, if you still own that animal, may also make it difficult to obtain coverage from a standard insurance provider.
