It depends! Like most everything in the world of life insurance, rates and qualifications for different life insurance policies vary widely from company to company. Typically, though, if your DUI was more than 5 years ago it won't affect your ability to get a policy. Inside of 5 years, it will, and it will also affect your rates, as most insurance companies won't give you their best rates if you have a DUI. This means that your DUI will cost you some extra dollars when it comes time to pay your premiums.

If the DUI is many years ago and you have not had any repeat offenses, you can get Life Insurance at a similar rate than if you never had a DUI at all. If the DUI was very recent, and especially if your license is suspended because of the DUI, you may need to purchase a guaranteed issue policy until some time has passed.

Once you get a year or two out from the DUI you will be able to buy at least simplified issue life insurance, and again, when more years have passed, the effect of the DUI on your rates will lessen until it has little to no effect at all.

Repeat DUI's, being ordered to attend treatment multiple times, or multiple types of driving offenses can complicate things. Contact a good impaired risk life insurance agent to sort through many companies for you so you can get the lowest possible rate that you qualify for at this time, and keep in mind that you may be able to get a better price in the future.
