Northwestern Mutual is a company which the owners are not shareholders by rather insured. Mutual companies do not really work any differently than other insurance companies.

The difference may be in the product offering although the basic term & permanent life policies along with dividend paying products.

The process of applying for and underwriting for life insurance will be similar with all other life companies.

Not all agents are appointed with Northwestern Mutual however so you may have to call the company to be referred to an agent.
