To start with, look for someone who has very open communication.  The best agents can be reached by phone, email, social media, etc.  If you have a hard time getting timely responses, think about finding someone who is ready and willing to assist you.  Also, ask the agent if she’s a part of any organizations or associations.  It’s comforting to work with an agent who is regularly advised of the newest products and guidelines.  And lastly, find an agent who is persistent.  Independent agents have the ability to work with numerous carriers, so they have the capabilities to find you numerous quotes.  Have her show you all of the options.

You will want to look for an agent who will listen and know how to apply that information to find you the best priced policy. If you just told your life/health/disability insurance representative that you have diabetes, there should be some follow up questions, especially if you are purchasing a policy over $100,000. If their questions are rote and the first thing they suggest is accidental death, you need to find someone else. Honesty, integrity, intelligence, and a good personality are all helpful in making your insurance purchase a good experience.

Traits that you would look for in any one that you would depend on for anything! Such as honesty, integrity, and genuine concern for your best outcome I would think would be at the top of the list. Additionally you will want an agent who is knowledgeable in the areas of their profession with greater interest in your benefit than their commission. Discernment and good communication skills are also a must.
