    AD&D (accidental death and dismemberment) can be a stand alone policy or a rider to a life insurance policy.

    Life insurance policies pay in the case of death, regardless of the cause.

    AD&D policies only pay if death (or dismemberment) is the result of an accident. AD&D plans have a place but should not be your only form of life insurance
