Each state has n insurance department that issues several licenses to sell different insurance products, including life insurance. A candidate for life insurance is required to take and pass test to receive licensed authority to sell life insurance. Most carriers also require error and omissions. My recommendation is that you speak to a licensed local agent or go online to a brokerage shop that offers multiple carriers.

Many life insurance agents will talk to you about life insurance and help you figure out what is best for you. Since life insurance agents literally deal with life and death, most have a desire to help others. If you try one agency and they just push you to buy without explaining what you need to know, just go to another one. The internet and cities are full of choices.

Buying life insurance should be easy if it weren't for the agents out there that are only interested in selling life insurance and not caring about the amount and the type you need. There is only one kind of life insurance that you should be considered by the consumer and that is level term protection. With level term life insurance you can protect the family in the early years while the debt is higher, there is a mortgage, and the kids are still at home. In the later years when debt is gone, mortgage is paid, and kids are out of the house the need for life insurance is non-existent. Life insurance agents will try to sell ill-informed people various cash value policies by touting the cash value as an investment for the future. What they don't tell you is that if you die the cash values are returned to the company and if you take and cash values out of the policy or "borrow" them you are borrowing your own money and paying interest while reducing the face amount by the amount that was borrowed. I know this is a lot to sink in but the bottom line is that if you are looking for life insurance be educated to the concept of "buy term and invest the difference" and get as much as you need to cover debt, death, income replacement, and education for the kids. When you talk to an agent make sure that he is tuned into this principle and if he tries to turn you against it go to the next agent or go until you find one that will listen to you.
