Medicare will pay for weight loss programs under certain conditions. Some things to know are:

Medicare will pay for weight loss programs only if weight loss is needed to treat certain health conditions related to being overweight, or is needed before surgery to reduce the risk of complications.

Up to three hours of individual counseling about weight loss is provided the first year, and two hours per year after that. If you need more treatment than that, Medicare may pay for more with a doctor's prescription and if the treatment is medially approved by Medicare.
