Medicare reimbursement is considerably less than what providers will receive from private insurance. On average, about 20% less but the amount can vary.

Most doctors and other medical providers will readily admit they either lose money on Medicare patients or break even.

The result of the low pay is a shifting of money lost on Medicare patients which results in private insurance patients paying more than they would otherwise.
