Gynecomastia is the enlargement of gland tissue of the male breast. Mastectomy for gynecomastia may be covered if determined medically necessary and meeting Medicare approval. The tissue being removed must be mostly breast tissue and not adipose (fatty tissue), the surgery cannot be done for purely psychological reasons, and alleviation of pain is usually a factor.
