A Medigap Plan purchased through AARP means you will have Medicare Supplement insurance through United Healthcare.  Medigap Plans A, B, C, F, K, L and N are sold by AARP.  In some states, AARP has Medigap SELECT plans.  For example, if you have Medigap SELECT Plan F or C, you get all the benefits of those plans -- except you have to use the hospitals in the network directory to receive full hospital care benefits.  Applicants must be AARP members or live in the same household and share the same AARP membership number.

It's important to note that Medigap Plan benefits are standardized; so, Plan F with AARP is the same Plan F with another insurance company.  The difference is the price.  An independent agent specializing in Medicare Supplement insurance can help you compare an AARP premium to other insurance companies.

Many people like to do their own research and sometimes will end up with an insurance company such as AARP because it's easy to call up and enroll.  However, this 'easy' process can often times equate to a higher premium.  By working with an independent agent, you can compare an AARP premium to other insurance company premiums for the same Medigap Plan you desire.  This will make sure you are getting the best priced Medigap Plan.

AARP Medigap plans are Medigap plans insured through United Healthcare. In short, AARP partnered with United Healthcare to attach their name to UHC's products.

As Medigap plans feature standardized benefits, the coverage under each Medigap plan is exactly the same as it would be if you purchased the coverage from another carrier.

The main way the AARP Medigap plans differentiates themselves from other Medigap carriers is through their premium rating method. Most carriers determine their rates based on the attained-age rating method (your age at the time you apply with rates increasing as you get older each year). AARP Medigap plans (insured through United Healthcare) are based on the community-rated method (everyone in an area pays the same rates regardless of their age - meaning an 85 year old is paying the same thing as a 75 year old).

Please note, the carrier also offers value-added services such as discounts for certain things such as eye exams and also offer a 24/7 nurse hotline, and silversneakers membership. You must be an AARP member to buy an AARP Medigap plan - membership can be attained during the application process.

I hope the information is helpful - please feel free to contact me for assistance with your Medigap coverage including quotes and comparison and if you have any other questions. Thanks very much.
