    Medicare was passed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on July 30, 1965. Medicare and Medicaid were both passed on the same day, as amendments to the Social Security Act of 1935. The first Medicare beneficiaries were able to sign up for Medicare on July 1, 1966.
