    Medicare becomes effective when you sign up for the coverage. When you first turn 65 you are automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B.

    You can opt out of one or the other, or both but it is not advisable to opt out of Part A.

    If you are covered under an employer group health plan you probably don't need Part B until your group plan ends.
