Renters insurance WILL cover theft (and possibly damage) of items from your vehicle, but it will not cover damage to the actual vehicle, or theft of your vehicle. Damage, theft, and other losses associated with your vehicle would be covered by your auto insurance.  Renters insurance only covers the loss of your property, not your vehicle.

Renters insurance covers the theft of things inside your vehicle, as that is personal property not car insurance. Renters insurance would not cover the car itself, that is car insurance. Also, renters insurance travels with you, so like on vacation or a cruise and some of your personal items are stolen.
