You need renters insurance any time that you rent a premise. Renters insurance will provide coverage for your personal property and also provide you liability coverage. The landlord will more than likely have coverage for there building, but this coverage does not extend to any renters or their personal property.

It is nice to have renter’s insurance in force at least one day prior to suffering damage to your personal property or the event that triggers a lawsuit.  You probably need to have a renter’s policy in force before you lease property as that is frequently a requirement of the landlord.

That is a great question! I think renters insurance is an absolute must anytime you are living in someone else's property, that isn't named Mom or Dad. ( and even then sometimes you may want it) A good rule of thumb is to have a policy anytime it could be possible that you would have to pay to replace all of your stuff if it were destroyed. So, an apartment, have it. A dorm room, where the college may have liability for it, maybe not. Either way, it's a cheap policy, and great protection. Be safe, buy it. Thanks for asking!
