Absolutely not! Workers Compensation is a state insurance required to protect workers in the event of on the job accident or workplace induced illness. So, your recreational weekend motorcycle accident wouldn't be covered. Workers Compensation coverage levels vary from state to state and how lost income is addressed varies accordingly. Suffice it to say, if it is possible to fit into your financial plan, purchasing disability insurance to protect your income stream in the event of serious illness or injury, regardless of source, then Short and/or Long Term Disability insurance policies are a wise precaution.

No, they are not the same. Workers compensation will not cover you if you get hurt outside of work, or if you suffer from an illness that was not caused by your work surroundings. Disability Insurance would protect your income if you broke your leg skiing (outside of work), got in a car crash, got cancer, etc.

The general distinction between workman's compensation and disability insurance is workman's compensation pays for injuries on the job during working hours whereas disability insurance pays for injuries and sickness regardless of when and where it takes place. That distinction should be carefully understood when considering the purchase of disability insurance.
