Finding a life insurance policy after death can be accomplished. Often a deceased had many policies that the beneficiaries may not have been aware of.

Of course, checking bank and financial records of any payment made to an insurer in the last 10-20 years would be ideal. Also, get in contact with the deceased's agent, who may be aware of any missing policies.

Unfortunately, I've had some personal experience with this recently. The funeral director was very helpful, as he has worked with many life insurance companies over the years while helping families pay funeral charges for their loved ones. If you have the policy and don't recognize the name of the life insurance company, you can search for the insurance company name online and will often be able to find out if it has a new name or owner. Call the claim department when you do find the company; they are usually wonderful.
