Since a rental agreement is a legal contract, either party can make whatever requirement they deem important.  As a fellow landlord, I make it a requirement that all my tenants provide me with evidence of a renter’s policy naming me as the additional insured.  Your own insurance company should have alerted you concerning this matter.  The renter is responsible for property damage and personal injury claims on the rented property.
