    SR-22 is not insurance. It is a financial responsibility document that is typically required by the DMV. What happens when you have an SR-22 is that the insurance carrier files documentation with the DMV about your auto insurance coverage. This provides proof that you have auto insurance coverage and I believe notifies the DMV if that coverage is ended.
