    Insurance Advisor, Massachusetts
Let me share my experience.I'm a licensed fee-based (accept no commissions) insurance consultant who has studied insurance, obtained a number of industry designations, owned and operated a general insurance agency for nearly forty years and helped thousands of insurance consumers with their insurance questions. I have long harbored ill will toward GEICO and other insurers who chose not to do business with independent agents. I believe their sales staff (and that of other insurers selling direct to the public) are trained to sell what the insurer wants to sell;not what the consumer really needs.

But I recently sought to purchase auto insurance for myself and checked out a number of on-line insurance offerings. GEICO's premiums were one third of those indicated by E-surance, Progressive, and several others. The application process and live discussion with a sales person was cordial, professional and non-threatening.I was able to access my coverage information on-line, pay premiums directly and obtain insurance cards.Actually my experience was better than any I've had with any independent agent.

My conclusion, it is still important to know what you need and want. It is you against a large insurer and that means be cautious. But for my money I certainly would consider GEICO as an insurer. If nothing else they deserve a look.
