Generally, your auto insurance will expire 6 months after you purchased it, although some policies have a 12 month expiration date.  You can verify the exact date of your specific expiration date on your policy declarations page. This is generally referred to as the "X-Date" by your insurance agent or company.

Your auto insurance expires (technically) on the cancellation date of the contract. If you do not pay your bill, you will receive (at some point) a notice in writing that your policy will expire on a specific date.

That date is your expiration date and coverage ends. So don't drive on or beyond that date without either paying the premium or securing other coverage.
