What happens when you have no health insurance? Well for now, nothing. 2014 a possible fine depending on your situation. But also, you're deciding to self insure your risk with the hope you'll never have a problem.  If you use medical care as a self insured person, you will be asked to pay for your health care.

In 2014 due to the Healthcare Reform Bill, you may be penalized.  However right now nothing will happen.  Here's a scenario for you since you do not have health insurance and are considered a self pay/self insured.  Let's say that you decide to go to the Doctor because you are sick or injured, your doctor's office will more than likely work with you by giving you a discount or negotiated rate.  On the other hand, if you went to the emergency room/hospital due to sickness or injury, depending upon if the hospital is private or not, will be determined whether or not you are taken care of or sent away to a county hospital.  All hospitals are required to assess your health to determine your sickness/injury severity.  If the hospital you went to decided to work with you, you will be charged a lot more money than a person that already has insurance.  In addition, the individuals that have health insurance are taken care of first before those that do not have any insurance.  The exception to the rule is if you are in need of a life saving event i.e. heart attack, stroke, accident etc.  This is the main reason why having health insurance is very important.  Hopefully this answers your question more thoroughly.
