    Most policyholders do not have a claim. A policyholder that experiences a claim is no longer “standard.” The company may determine that it is necessary to increase the premium to reflect the greater risk that this particular insured presents. Additionally, companies have provisions allowing discounts for periods of being “claims free.” Sometimes the loss of this discount can represent a significant increase in premiums.
