That is an excellent question! First though, I want to make sure that you are clear on life insurance as "investments", since they technically aren't. An investment is something that makes you money (hopefully) over time. Life insurance won't make you money - it will pay a specified amount, and you won't be the one who receives it. An investment allows you to use the earnings during your lifetime, and that won't be an option with life insurance. Can a policy pay out more than you pay into it? You bet, but again, it will be your loved ones that receive that benefit, not you.
That said, Northwestern Mutual is a great company, and has been in business for years. I personally like and use them, and have no problem endorsing them. Thanks for asking!

Is Northwestern Mutual whole Life a good investment? Well it depends on your needs. Your needs are what make any choice a good or bad investment. First Northwestern Mutual is a very highly rated fiscally strong company, as many others are. Using Whole life as an investment does work as part of an overall investment strategy as it provides a safe place to accumulate money as well as protecting your other plans. What you will find is whole life insurance is the most boring investment product out there. It's not exciting, it's not racy, it's not an up and down product. It is a slow safe and secure place to put money out there. It's boring because it does what it says it will do. I have owned whole life for almost 30 years and it has never let me down. Can't say the same about my real estate or stock market investments during that same window of time. Oh, last thing to keep it short. Whole life cash values don't go backwards. You can't lose it once it's there.

First off, Northwestern Mutual is generally considered one of the highest rated companies in the world from a financial perspective.

Next, thinking of Insurance as an Investment is slightly dangerous. There are two schools of thought on this, the Whole Life Agents that believe that putting money in whole life is the best investment in the world and the so called "Termites" who believe buying a less expensive term policy and investing the remaining cash into a tax differed or tax free retirement account is your best bet.
