Medicare numbers in most cases are your Social Security number plus a letter at the end. In some cases your Medicare number may be the Social Security number of your spouse.

The letters at the end of your number designate your "status" as a Medicare beneficiary.

A "B" at the end means you are retired. "B1" means you are the spouse of a retired worker.
