    The NPI number is a ten digit identification number given to health care providers by the CMS (Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services). NPI stands for National Provider Identifier. It replaced the UPIN, Unique Provider Identification Number, in 2006. Health care providers are required to use the NPI for HIPAA correspondence.
