Renters insurance covers your personal property or property in your care custody and control from the perils listed in your policy.  If the property is damaged due to things like Fire, lightening, vandalism, theft or other perils then it would be covered.  If you damage someones property then there is no liability coverage for property damage.

A renter’s policy does not cover the residence.  It only covers your personal property.  If you are responsible for damage to the property, the liability section of the renter’s policy should provide for defense and costs of repair.  The tendency is to purchase a minimum renter’s policy.  The cost is so low, it would be better to estimate high and make sure that there is enough coverage to replace that which is destroyed by an “insured peril.”

That is a great question! The answer depends really on how the damage occurred. If the damage was part of a normal event, like a fire, weather damage, etc., then you should be covered. If the damage was a result of negligence, or horseplay, if you had added liability to your policy, then you may be covered, and without it, most likely not. Check with your agent to be certain. Good luck, and thanks for asking!
