A renter assumes liability over the property that they rent.  If someone is injured on the property, they might sue you.  A lawsuit could ruin you financially.  If the unit that you rent is destroyed by fire, all of your personal property inside the unit is also destroyed and other than a renter’s policy no one is going to help you.  The landlord is not responsible.
