    That is a great question! If you can afford to contribute to both your Roth IRA and your 401k, then by all means do so! What a great way to provide for your retirement. You can contribute $5500 per year ($6500 if you are 50+) to your Roth, and $17,500 in your 401k. Ideally, you contribute the max to your 401k, especially if your employer matches, and then fund your Roth, to ensure that you have some tax free income to balance the taxed income from the 401k.
