   Renter's insurance, and all insurance policies for that matter, can be canceled by the insured at any time.  Insurance companies do not like to write policies for short periods because of the cost of underwriting.  This is one reason insurance companies provide discounts for policies that are paid in advance rather than in monthly installments.  People are much less likely to cancel their policies if they have been paid in advance.
