    Outside of friends and family, in 2014 and beyond, the primary means that a person can obtain assistance in paying for health insurance will be in two ways;

    1) Meeting the low income eligibility thresholds to qualify for Medicaid in your home state (which after the Supreme Court decision throwing out the requirement that states raise their eligibility thresholds for Medicaid can vary from state to state)

    2) By qualifying for an Advanced Premium Tax subsidy through the Federal or State health insurance marketplace available in your state of residence.  Technically, individuals and families can qualify for such subsides all the way up to 400% of the Federal poverty level, which right now is a little over $42,000/year for an individual and a little over $94,000/year for a family of four.  I say technically because as you approach these upper limits the subsidies decline rapidly to such small amounts that they have little financial value in proportion to the overall cost of health insurance.  People in the 138% to  around 275% of the Federal poverty level get the most benefit from these subsidies.
