Does smoking void life insurance? It can in one way that I know of, if you state that you are a nonsmoker when actually you are a smoker. In my state (insurance is regulated state by state, your state may be different) if you misstate your smoking status it "can" void the policy, even after two years.  The state considers the contract null and void so just a refund of premiums.

If you decide to start smoking after you've purchased life insurance, no penalties apply.

If you buy a life insurance policy as a nonsmoker, legitimately meeting the nonsmoker guidelines for the rating that you get, and then start to smoke later, your policy will not be voided. In fact, you will want to hang onto it for as long as you can because the rates will be a lot lower than the smoker rates you will get on your next policy.
