    Fixed annuities are only as good as the contract that stands behind them. And contracts are only as good as the financial strength behind the annuity. Most fixed rate annuities are purchasing investment grade government bonds, i.e. the strength of the payout is dependent on the country's ability to meet it's debt obligations.
