Insurance follows the car.  If you are involved in an accident the insurance on that car will be the primary coverage for a claim.  Your policy may provide secondary coverage if the claims exceeds the limits of the policy covering the car.  If you are driving a car that is rented you will be covered to the limits of your policy.  The key is that the insurance is on the car not you, the driver.  Make sure that the car is insured first.

Auto insurance follows the car, not the driver.  If you are licensed operator, you can drive any car.  Whether there is insurance on the car is up to the owner of the car.  If you are operating someone else’s auto and are involved in an accident the car’s policy will provide the coverage.  If the coverage is inadequate insurance that you carry on your car might be available to help satisfy any claims.
