That is an excellent question! If the car is registered, then most of the time there will be a minimum amount of insurance that has to be carried. If you don't register the car, and don't plan on driving it return your plates, and drop your coverage. If you plan on driving it periodically, ask your insurance company if they offer a limited use policy, or a one day policy that will allow you to legally drive it. I don't know where you live, but if there is a chance that the vehicle might get vandalized or damaged, you may want to keep a minimal cost coverage on the car. Thanks for asking!

If the car is not being operated it certainly doesn’t need liability insurance, nor does it need collision insurance.  You might choose to maintain comprehensive coverage in the event the car is damaged or destroyed.  This type of loss can occur.  Cars burn up in garages, cars get damaged in floods, cars get struck by lightning, and I suppose at least once a car has been damaged by an angry animal.

That may depend upon the state in which you live and have your car registered.  In Connecticut, we are required by law to maintain liability coverage in order to maintain registration.  That having been said, it may be possible to temporarily suspend liability coverage without affecting your registration, but you'll need to talk to your Insurance Professional about that option.  Even if you suspend liability, it is not a bad idea to maintain at least Comprehensive Coverage as you will be protected in the event that the car is damaged or stolen.
