Check with your insurance professional before you rent, but in many cases, no you do not.  In many cases, the coverage provided by your personal auto policy extends over to any passenger vehicle you drive while it temporarily replaces your own.  In addition, check with your credit dard company because in many cases, your card offers coverage up to $500.00 if used to rent a car.  This in many cases is enough to cover your policy's Comp or Collision deductible.

    Here is a life hack:
    1. Check with your credit card provider. Many of them offer liability coverage automatically included as long as you pay for the rental with this card.
    2. If you have business insurance, but no business auto, add Hired/Non-Owned coverage. For pennies a day ($100-$200 a year) it will provide you with auto liability insurance for cars you rent or borrow for your business needs. It also covers your employees' and your personal auto that was used in a course of business.
For example, you are asking your employee to drop off office keys. The employee gets into the accident. You have liability coverage provided.
    3. Some insurance carrier also offer hired car property damage. This is the coverage for the car you rented/hired/borrowed.

Most companies extend the same coverage to a rental car as they do to a private vehicle that you own. The insurance offered at the counter, while expensive, does have the advantage of allowing you to return the car, end the contract and walk away, regardless of the condition of the car. Personally, I never buy auto insurance from a car rental company.
